Wake to Survival
The figure was nothing but shadow
I held my breath
No thought passed through my mind
as the figure approached with speed
silent and straight on
I felt no pain as the knife plunged
deep into my chest
stomach twitching as I woke
Ah..a dream...
is it strange I felt at peace in that moment
a sense of calm
yes, calm as I sat up reflecting on the strange sensation the thought had caused
Why?
Perhaps only my subconscious knew
Like some strangely dark secret wish kept from myself
Longing for eternal sleep
But yet I wake
Strange yet understood
I get up to tend to the day
Dream fading but the calm remaining
And then one realizes..
there is no stress in death.
It is the fear of the pain during "dying" that one avoids
not death itself
Thus the ones who go in sleep are luckiest
But it makes us wonder
Those who go in sleep
What was their dream?
In the moments of final breath as they slept,
what did they see?
For unlike me, they do not wake to tell of these dreams.
